Appraisals in Cambodia: probation reviews and annual cycles
How a Cambodian employer runs a review cycle that finishes: templates, weighted scoring, self-assessment, manager review, and employee acknowledgement.
Most appraisal cycles fail by not finishing
The forms go out, some come back, a few conversations happen, and the cycle quietly dissolves in March. What causes that is not disinterest — it is that nobody can see, at any moment, exactly which stage each review is stuck at and whose turn it is.
Probation reviews carry legal weight in Cambodia
Cambodian labour law limits how long a probation period may run, and the decision at the end of it changes an employee's status materially. A probation review that happens late, or that exists only as a verbal conversation, weakens the employer's position precisely when it needs to be strong. Treat it as a dated, recorded review rather than an informal chat.
One review, through its stages
An appraisal sits at exactly one stage at a time, and each stage has one owner. That is what turns "how is the cycle going?" from a survey into a look at a screen.
- 1HR / Payroll
Build the template with weights
Questions carry weights, so the score reflects what the organisation actually values rather than averaging everything equally. A different template can apply to a probation review than to an annual one.
- 2HR / PayrollInitiation
Open the cycle and generate the reviews
One action creates an appraisal for every employee in scope, each already pointed at its first stage and its first owner. Nobody has to distribute anything.
- 3EmployeeSelf assessment
The employee answers first
Putting self-assessment first means the manager is responding to something rather than starting from a blank form — and the employee's own account of the year is on the record before anyone grades it.
- 4ManagerManager evaluation
The manager evaluates against the same questions
Same template, same weights, so the two views are comparable question by question. Where they diverge sharply is exactly where the conversation should go.
- 5HR / PayrollHR review
HR reviews before anything is final
This is where scoring that drifts between departments gets caught. Without it, one lenient manager and one strict one produce numbers that cannot be used for any decision.
- 6EmployeeEmployee acknowledgement
The employee acknowledges the outcome
Acknowledging is not agreeing — it records that the employee saw the result. That distinction matters if the appraisal is ever cited in a performance or termination discussion.
- 7HumanetiCompleted
Each stage change notifies the next owner
The review moves on and the person now responsible is told. A cycle stalls when a form sits in someone's queue silently — being told is the difference between a cycle that closes and one that dissolves.
